Tricks for Using Bait
 Although baits vary from season to season and fish to fish, local captains often rely on ballyhoo and split mullet as the year round staple baits of choice.

Trolled on the surface, they make excellent bait for Dolphin, while using downriggers greatly improves the chances for Wahoo and Kingfish. 

The secret to catching Dolphin year round in the warmer waters of the Gulf Stream off Palm Beach is knowing where to look.

Anglers know that bait congregate around floating debris and weed lines. However, as the seasoned captain knows, if Dolphin are concentrating on feeding, the angler needs to create some kind of excitement to draw the fish away from the weed line and to the bait.

It also takes a trained eye to find fish by looking for changes in water temperature or rip lines in the current.

The old saying that the worse the weather, the better the fishing is mostly true when looking for sailfish in the waters off Palm Beach.

Cold-fronts that can bring a decrease in temperature of 10 - 20 degrees overnight and a strong north-east breeze push schools of bait fish south making December thru February the prime season for sails.
The local bait of choice is live goggle-eyes. Although you can troll or drift using live bait, dangling from an overhead kite is the preferred method of catching sails for Palm Beach charter captains.
