This
tropical island has been a favorite spot for locals for years, there
is always something fun going on here. Located at the mouth of the
Lake Worth Inlet, this 80-acre man-made island attracts explorers of
every type. The crystal clear water that surrounds the island invites
snorkelers and swimmers, while the brick pathways that circle the
island attract the nature seekers and those looking for a little
exercise.
Our kayak tour of Peanut Island begins with an introduction to the
area. The guests are fitted with PFD’s (person flotation devices) and
given some brief instruction on basic paddling skills and strokes.
Once fitted for a boat (we have both singles and doubles) guests we
hit the water for an enjoyable paddle across the clear waters of the
Lake Worth lagoon. While we paddle along the shoreline you’ll be up
close to the beautiful and breathtaking mansions of Palm Beach.
Then
it’s back to the east side of the island where we'll set foot on the
island’s soft sand. There is plenty of time to explore the island or
go for a swim. Plan a group picnic, play some games, or simply relax.
On your way back, keep your eyes on the waters, you might see dolphin
or maybe even a manatee.
Tour the “Kennedy Bunker” During the Cuban Missile Crisis, the
SeaBees secretly, and very quickly built a bunker for the President,
who spent a great deal of time at the Kennedy Compound here in Palm
Beach. Although it would have been a temporary command center for the
nation in a time of crisis, it is still relatively small. It was
constructed adjacent to the U.S. Coast Guard Station, about 100 yards
away, concealed in the woods, underground. Over the years, the bunker
fell into complete disrepair, but was restored by the Palm Beach
Maritime Museum.
With
the exception of a presidential seal, added as a modern enhancement,
the declassified, decommissioned bunker is very close to the original.
The structure is covered with earth and many layers of concrete and
rebar. Entry is via a blast-hardened tunnel, with a 90 degree angle to
minimize shock effects from a nuclear explosion. Entry is through a
secure decontamination area, which was, however, and interestingly,
made of plywood. This is a thought-provoking exhibit, especially in
light of recent events in the United States.
[NOTE: due to hurricane
damage, the bunker tour has been suspended. Check back with us...]
