One
of Palm Beach's best kept secrets is Munyon Island, a beautifully
restored island which is under the watchful eye of the only state park
in the county, the
John D. MacArthur Beach State Park.
This tour is characterized by gentle waters - the water is shallow and
motorized craft is largely prohibited from our paddling path due to
the protected sea grass that sways under the surface.
The early Seminole Indians called
this island “Nuctsachoo” or Pelican Island. It was later named for the
flamboyant James Munyon, who built a five-story hotel on the island’s
south shore. The hotel Hygeia burned to the ground in 1917 and the
island remained mostly uninhabited until a major restoration project
was started by Palm Beach County in 1992. Now, the island is one of
Palm Beach County’s main jewels. With the planting of more than 30,000
mangrove trees, paddling through the winding trails, is truly a
testament to the incredible work that was done on this tropical
island.
Munyon
Island is a ‘must see’ for anyone who wants to enjoy the great weather
and outdoors in South Florida. There are several open-air pavilions
that will provide your group an ideal location to plan a corporate
picnic, relaxed meetingsite or just a wonderful place to relax and
swim.
Our tour begins with an introduction to the area. After being issued
jacket and paddle, your guides will conduct “Paddling 101”, a short
lesson on ergonomic paddling. You will then be fitted in a kayak (we
have both singles and doubles) and hit the water for an enjoyable
paddle through the calm shallow waters. We’ll head to the northern tip
of the island and take a short swimming break on a white sandy beach,
then onward through the winding mangrove trails.
When we reach the west side, we’ll stop on the beach and explore the
island while your guide shares some of the island’s history, native
flora and fauna. Watch for “Ozzie & Harriet,” the two dolphin that
call this lagoon home. We’ll paddle around small mangrove islands as
we continue to make our way back to our launching spot.
